David Burkus, teaching us how to leverage what we already have! - dHarmic Evolution Podcast

The number one source for new jobs and opportunities come from weak and dormant ties. Because these ties are not strangers to us and have diverse information and new potential introductions. – David Burkus

Hello everyone and welcome back to the dHarmic Evolution show! Taking a ride on the show with us today is David Burkus. A skilled researcher and inspiring communicator, David is a former associate professor of leadership and innovation at Oral Roberts University.

He has delivered keynote speeches and workshops for Fortune 500 companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Stryker, and governmental and military leaders at the US Naval Academy and Naval Postgraduate School. His TED talk has been viewed over two million times.

An established writer, David has a number of books – and best sellers- under his belt, including; Friend of a Friend, Under New Management and The Myths of Creativity

David’s Background

While still in high school, David had his mind fixated on pursuing a career in writing. Writing, being such a divergent industry, left David entangled in a quagmire of what kind of writing niche to take on. Driven by passion, David set for his undergraduate studies in English – Creative writing.

Having lunged into different genres of writing while in College, David found himself connected and relating to Social Science non-fiction. He felt drawn to the works of Malcom Gladwell in particular. He loved just how Gladwell’s kind would use their talented storytelling and writing skills to address different issues and make an impact on the world. This inspired David to head for graduate studies in Organizational Psychology.

In January 2010, while taking his graduate studies, David, fuelled by his ambition towards social science non-fiction writing and his beliefs in networking, started a Podcast Show. Although he was faced by numerous Podcasting hurdles at the time, David remained focused and was able to leverage his show into getting interviews with top guests in his field of study (all of whom responded due to the unfamiliar, yet interesting Podcast media form). David snowballed from the connections and networks he built while podcasting and was able to transition and build his career in the writing and publishing niche without much difficulty.

[6:13] The job of an author or any artist, is to constantly be marketing oneself. Constantly building your audience. And occasionally you launch a creative work into that.
[8:00] I’ve never studied chronotypes, but I do know that reactive work, should be done in the afternoons.
[11:22] The book is a souvenir of the idea, and what you sell is an implementation of the idea.
[11:27] Marketing is just trying to get as many people as you can to go from not knowing you exist, to knowing you exist, and once they know you exist, trying to be continuously helpful.
[22:50] The number one source for new jobs and opportunities, come from weak and dormant ties. Because these ties are not strangers to us and have diverse information and new potential introductions.
[25:00] The people that you’re connected to on social media should either be people you know in the ‘Real-world’ or people that you intend to move into un in-person relationship.

DE253 Savannah Morris, one of the 8 Nashville Natives, a Beautiful Energetic Sound

Savannah Morris, one of the 8 Nashville Natives, a Beautiful Energetic Sound - dHarmic Evolution Podcast

Welcome to the dHarmic Evolution Podcast, and joining us from the music city of Nashville, Tennessee is a local born, raised and made, Savannah Morris, with her own distinctive sound, and an energy that is hard to duplicate, take a listen to where she has been, and more importantly, where she is heading!

Born in a musical family, Savannah feels the path towards her career in music was made the moment she took her first breath. Growing up around a supportive and inspirational environment of parents who were not just musically talented but local celebrities, went a long way in weaving the fate of Savannah and her brother as music proteges.

As one of the 8 Nashville Natives, Savannah feels blessed both career-wise and socially by networking and linking with a lot of the Native locals in the music and entertainment industry, all of whom have supported and helped her evolve and get better with her music.

Recalling her daily ‘SHEPF’ routine, which was Savannah and her brother’s daily after-school drill of having snacks, doing homework, exercise, and later on playing the piano and fiddle. Savannah admits that it all annoyed her, but nostalgically reminiscent, this routine was a key factor leading to her disciplined and passionate drive towards success in her music career.

Growing up in a musical family has its pros. Savannah is a testament to this as she narrates the invaluable opportunities and chances she got from performing alongside her parents, gaining not just the much-needed confidence which was a “must-have” for her lifelong career in music, but she also got to meet great individuals and celebrities like Morgan Freeman.

Quotes from Savannah

You’re blessed to be an artist, you’re blessed to be doing music as a career, and although a lot of artists fail to see this as they’re blinded by their goals of becoming big and famous. It’s truly a blessing to do something you love, as you never work a day in your life – Savannah Morris

DE252 Road Rage, how it can entrap you, and how to get rid of it!

Road Rage, how it can entrap you, and how to get rid of it! - dHarmic Evolution Podcast

It’s undoubtedly growing and becoming a norm in our road and social culture. Today’s show is going to be a bit personal, as I share my 3 personal experiences, takeaways and lessons learned from road rage.

My first engagement with road rage goes way back when I was only 7. This was back in the 60s and even though the term road rage hadn’t been coined yet, there were still a number of incidences happening.

I remember traveling with my mom to see her mother (my grandmother) and as we turned down the street that my grandmother lived on, down the end of the crowded street, we saw a woman trying to back out of a driveway. As she did this, another car further down the street was speeding towards the woman. I could clearly tell that there was going to be a big calamity about to unfold before our eyes. My mom, however, in an attempt to stop the whole incident from happening decided to speed up our car, tearing down the street, and eventually positioning us between the woman trying to back out of the driveway and the incoming speeding car, in doing so, my mom blocked the incoming car.

The man from the speeding car immediately sprung out of his vehicle and mad with rage, he began a series of yelling and screaming.

That marked my first experience with road rage, and from it, I learned two important lessons, righteousness and bravery.
Anyone in my mom’s position could have opted to mind their own business and let fate take its course. But not my mom though a petite 110-pound lady. She decided to put not just herself, but her 7-year-old son in harm’s way for the sake of this total stranger’s safety.

My second experience with road rage happened in 1980. I was working for an electrical contractor based in Essex County, New Jersey. It was Christmas Eve and my partner Paul and I was working on a certain contract in Newark, New Jersey (Newark was a pretty unsafe place to be back in the day). It was noon, and Paul and I had gone to grab some food as we get ready to call it a day. On our return to the truck, we found a small car that had just double-parked us.

The car window was opened, so I jumped in, released the handbrake and we pushed the car across the street and out of the way. Out truck was now free.

As we returned to our truck, the owner of the car we just re-parked showed up and started tearing into us with all manner of yelling and screaming. Paul tried cooling him down, assuring him that his car was fine. But Paul’s methods didn’t seem to work, as the guy looked like he was ready to take the confrontation to the next level and go all physical on us.

Paul noticing what was about to happen, disappeared to the back of our track and showed up moments later with a conduit bender.
All this time, I’m standing by the side. Mouth zipped and silent as a grave.

They keep tearing into each other a bit more. I waited for a small break and decided to dive in, ‘’All right, let’s go home.’’

And I don’t know if it was the Holy Spirit working through me, but that’s all it took and the argument stopped.

What I learned from this incident is that you shouldn’t get into confrontations with strangers. Because first of all, you don’t know what this person is capable of as far as doing something stupid and do you really want to bring that person into your life through a relationship filled lawyers, council, litigation or jail?

My third personal experience involving road rage only happened about 3 – 4 weeks ago as I was driving west on Route 40, just out of Nashville.

There was something on my mind that was really disturbing me. I was in the middle lane and had been driving for about 10 minutes when someone who was driving so aggressively cut right in front of me.

This made me get so livid that I immediately switched to the fast lane, and to my surprise, I heard the sound of a screaming horn from my left side. I had just cut someone off!

Just like that, I could have wrecked someone else’s car, day and life, all because I got tripped up.

I learned that road rage is mostly a factor of being unconsciously tripped up into a situation that you’re fully aware of.

It’s all about self-awareness. We all have our personal issues that trouble our hearts and minds, and funny enough they always seem to pop up even in the most unexpected times. When this happens, we should cast away such thoughts and remain in the present moment, focus on nothing but the driving. And remember to keep the golden rule, if you ever find yourself in a road rage situation, defuse it immediately, drive away. Wave politely, and don’t get into any sort of encounter with a complete stranger.

Dr. Laura Mattia, Author, Speaker, Thought Leader, Financial Empowerment, Here to Challenge and Inspire You! - dHarmic Evolution Podcast

Happy New Year everyone! And welcome back to the dHarmic evolution.

Joining us on the first show of 2020 is Dr. Laura Mattia. So, sit back relax, get yourself a notebook and a pen, because this is going to be an action-packed, resourceful and informative podcast for all of you.

Dr. Laura Mattia is a former corporate financial executive and has over 30 years of experience in Finance. She’s also the founder of The Women’s Money Empowerment Network – An educational Research program through the 501c 3 organization whose mission is to teach women to become financially engaged so that they can live life on their own terms, receive guidance and conduct research. Dr. Laura is also the author of Gender on Wall Street (A book uncovering opportunities for women in Financial services). She has currently dedicated her career in training the next generation of ethical, educated and inspired financial planners.

Dr. Laura despite having Majored in Psychology, decided to take an MBA in finance and accounting in order to pay the house bills and support her family, this path would eventually lead her to the corporate world. It was while working as a woman in the executive world that she constantly got approached by women who requested help while handling financial matters in relation to issues such as divorce, workers’ compensation, property management, etc. This would prove to be the root source of Dr. Laura’s eureka moment, where she decided to shift into the role of a financial adviser.

Having experienced a lot of gender-based difficulties and obstacles while working as an executive. Laura helps women who are currently in similar situations to successfully overcome such hurdles and have more fulfilling careers.
The gender problem, Dr. Laura describes, is rooted deep in our societies and cultures. It subconsciously affects both genders. That’s why we have so many women who have given in to less influential roles because they’ve bought into the stereotype of where women are supposed to be.

Dr. Laura spends a lot of her free time running to keep fit. She has also been regularly meditating ever since she was introduced to the art by her father when she was 13.

‘’Is it nature or is it nurture? And as a Psychology Major and mother of four, I can absolutely tell you that a lot of things are natural.’’ – Dr. Laura Mattia
