Righteousness and what it means, the quality of being morally right or justifiable, Bravery is the right hand of Righteousness.

It was 1963, I was 8 years old and in the car with my Mom, we had just turned onto Swain place off of Northfield Avenue in West Orange, like we had done a hundred times before over the last 8 years. I was in the front seat, we were almost at Ma and Pops house my mom parents, my grandparents.

As we turned off of Rollinson street onto Swain place something changed, as we got down the block a few hundred feet, we could see some woman just starting to back out of a driveway, Further down the block another car, a convertible was coming in the opposite direction toward us. As this scene came into focus you could see the convertible start to accelerate and a rapid speed and it seemed as he was turning his car into a missile heading straight for this woman’s car who was backing out of the driveway.

Betty immediately slammed on the gas, got up to where the woman was trying to back out, passed her and swung her station wagon right in front of the convertible, causing this guy to slam on the breaks and skid to stop only a foot from our car. All this ruckus caused Pop (My grandfather) to come ambling out the house, and he got into a verbal battle with the guy in the convertible who was clearly out of his mind with road rage, it was apparent that his intent was to run his car right into this woman’s car and cause her severe injury if not kill her.

Pop was a sly fox as he walked in front of this guys car he was saying to him look what you did to the street here you got it all marked up with your skid marks, (he was really gathering a visual of this guys license plate #) Meanwhile this guy, is throwing a nut in his car yelling and screaming at Pop, Hey get out of the Road Santa Clause! The woman backing out now shielded by Betty’s car drove off and extricated herself from the situation in the opposite direction unscathed thanks to the bravery of my Mom.

She taught me about Righteousness without ever saying the word, she never talked the talk, she walked the walk, immersed in Faith and Righteousness, her bravery showed me how it all works.

#7 Daren Peter O’Connor

It was March 1964 and my Father came up to say goodnight and have a very limited conversation with my Brother Andy and I, I was 9 years old, I remember him saying to us “we are going to have another baby” I remember laying on my back and looking up at him and saying “another one”? without missing a beat, he slowly turned around with a small groan shaking his head, eyes looking toward the ceiling as if looking for divine intervention, then he slowly retreated to his bedroom.

Bedroom and house setup:

Pull out couch,

3 bedroom house with one bathroom

Back to the story of Betty, making lunches, running kids around

She would take everything that nature threw at her, but there was always room for more, she would always take time to make a meal for someone and send it out all wrapped up, complete with a side of gravy, bread, and dessert. She was truly a superwoman, who never complained, she just got it done…

August 1964 I was at Ma and Pops house, Ma was in her big green chair on one side of the living room, Pop was in his Easy chair on the other side watching the Mets get killed, I would always ask him, “hey Pop how are the Mets doing” Oh they stink he was say so disgusted, as he loved his Mets. He would have to wait 5 more years for his beloved Mets to become the Amazing Mets and win the World Series in 69.

The phone rang and I was at my post in the front parlor with this old bench like seat where they kept the phone, a black dial classic with such an annoying ring!

When I visited I was the dedicated receptionist, as I had an intuitive love of electronics, wiring, and anything that had the slightest aroma of cool and creative, the phone was the only hi-tech thing in my world at that time.

I picked up the phone and it was Mom, she just delivered #7, “Hi Mom” oh its a boy? Ma and Pop now have a back and forth with the name Daren, Gavin, Gary? Gavy?, Gave, this banter went on for about 2 minutes,  so on August 26th, 1964 we welcomed to the world, Daren Peter O’Connor.

The Fire:

It was 1965, I was 10 years old, I was at Ma and Pop’s again, and I was in the parlor again, and Ma and Pop were in their respective chairs in the living room, it was either late fall or early winter as the storm door was on and I was inside waiting for my father to pick me up from work on his way home. The phone rang and I answered again, it was Mom, her voice telegraphed into the core of my soul, GET POP, what’s the matter Mom GET POP!!!

I yelled Pop, he must have picked up on the anxiety in my voice as he came into the room very quickly. He stayed on the phone for only a few brief seconds, hung up and immediately called one of his friends at the Fire Dept. Our house was on fire, my Mom instead of trying to get the fire dept or police knew she could get more action from her Father than anyone else, no such thing as 911 in those days.

Pop was still on with one of the Fire dept members, just then my Dad came in with his business suit on and long overcoat, and Pop without even breaking stride with the conversation, yelled: “Gump your house is on Fire”! My father immediately exited slamming the door and damn near taking the hinges with him.

So this means my Mom was at home with a newborn, and a house full of kids and had to get everyone out with what clothes and bare essentials she could all by herself, only Betty could pull this off!

We were all displaced at Grandparents and friends home for a time while the second floor was rebuilt.

After the repairs were all completed and were all back together again I remember we were at one of our classic Saturday afternoon backyard barbecue’s where all your cousins or neighborhood friends would come over and we have a picnic, back then everyone had lots of kids, and there was no such thing as entertainment as we know it now, except for maybe 6 or 7 channels on a black and white TV.

I remember my Father talking to one of my Uncles about the size of the family in relation to the size of the house and how he exclaimed, “I think I want to Move West Bill” I was over the moon, we were moving West! I had dreams in my head of wild rivers in Montana, the Badlands, wild horses, western sunsets, the Mountains and valleys of Utah, and the coast of sunny California”!

It turns out his version of West meant 8.7 miles west or 21 minutes by car West to Florham Park. But that is where we ended up and then an entirely new chapter had started in 1968.

After my Dad passed in 2008 it was really difficult for my Mom to get over him, they had been together since childhood as High school sweethearts and were having kids even though they were kids, my Mom had 4 kids by the time she was 25 years old, almost inconceivable by today’s standards.

She suffered some hospital visits, pneumonia, double lung infection, a few falls and broken bones, but nothing could stop her gregarious nature, even after she was diagnosed with dementia a few years ago, her spirit never dampened, and she never gave up.

The Blessing:

On May 1st, 2018 I prayed to the Lord and asked for a gift, that Betty is blessed with being able to stay at home and pass on peacefully in her sleep without any pain, surrounded by her family, her friends, and in the home that she so dearly loved. That prayer was answered at 1:59 AM on Tuesday, March 19th as I held her hands and watched her take her last few breaths, moving from this world into the arms of Jesus.

An Irish Exit

Aging is Indifference
My Father always warned me if I lingered Lazily
Too far into the ocean
The tide could not pull me back.

I resist the riptide
I stay close to the shore
Close to sunburnt days
Seasoning my skin with freckles,
Only shaking off the sand for dinnertime.

Wooden grandfather clocks are for decoration.
Each summer’s end leads to anticipating the next.

Seven decades my senior,
I still could catch you stealing chocolate in the kitchen
Mimicking the giggles of a toddler,
Telling old stories with a sailor’s grin,
Beaming with baby blue eyes.

So sudden a lifetime of cheerfulness
Got swept away.

DE208 English Bob, Peter Griffin, London Bridge, Uber, and Life as a Cartoon!

English Bob, Peter Griffin, London Bridge, Uber, and Life as a Cartoon! - dHarmic Evolution Podcast
[audioalbum title=""][audiotrack title="Three Miles Wide" songwriter="James Kevin O'Connor" wav="https://dharmicevolution.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/3-Miles-Wide-MASTERED.wav" width="300" height="500"]

You are in for a real treat during this episode of the dHarmic Evolution podcast. James Kevin is joined by his good friend English Bob and special guest Peter Griffin from Family Guy. You may recall that Jacked Up Jimmy is on a bowling team with Peter Griffin, who is a fan of James Kevin’s music and podcast, so he stopped by the show.

During the course of the conversation, English Bob revealed that he has never been to London because of the terrifying thought that London Bridge has fallen down or will fall down while he is there. When James Kevin asks if he might consider talking with a therapist about this fear, English says that he doesn’t think they exist in Lower Ipswich, and he doubts even that would work. James Kevin emphasizes that he expects English to be in London for his tour kickoff, and asks if it would help if Dr. Woofenboot came along. Still, English Bob remains adamantly against going to London.

Suddenly, Peter Griffin shows up at the studio door, and while James Kevin is intrigued that he has come as a cartoon, English Bob is (of course) terrified. Peter greets James Kevin and English and says that he is a fan of James Kevin’s music even if Jacked Up Jimmy isn’t. He goes on to say that even though a lot of people are frightened when he shows up places as a cartoon, it has tremendous advantages such as being able to imagine and then become things and being indestructible, and also going out on Halloween as the Waldorf Astoria!

Peter gets overly excited when James Kevin begins to describe his song “Three Miles Wide” and isn’t really able to concentrate on anything else for the rest of the show.

DE207 Jacked up Jimmy, the IBEW, Dancers, Sex, and Peter Griffin from Family Guy!

Jacked up Jimmy, the IBEW, Dancers, Sex, and Peter Griffin from Family Guy! - dHarmic Evolution Podcast
[audioalbum title=""][audiotrack title="51 Shades Of Grey" songwriter="James Kevin O'Connor " wav="https://dharmicevolution.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/04_51-Shades-Of-Grey.wav" width="300" height="500"]

You are in for a treat during this episode of the dHarmic Evolution podcast as James Kevin is joined by his good buddy Jacked Up Jimmy. It is never a dull moment with Jacked Up, who is a business agent for the IBEW electrical union with quite a colorful life, though it seems completely normal to him. The first indication that James Kevin was in for an interesting interview with Jacked Up was his mode of transportation. Clancy Wagonblast loaned Jacked Up his “car” while Jacked Up was getting his snow tires put on, but the “car” turned out to be a backhoe instead.

The new song that James Kevin is featuring during this episode is “Fifty-One Shades of Grey”, which is ironic because Jacked Up and his wife, Matilda, only have sex when it is absolutely necessary. Since this was not a safe topic of conversation, they moved on to talking about Jacked Up’s bowling league and his team, the “Hurry Kanes”, recently winning the championship, the coveted Plastic Cup. One of Jacked Up’s teammates is the infamous Peter Griffin of Family Guy fame, but it is still unclear whether he is a cartoon in real life. James Kevin will find out if Jacked Up follows through on his promise to have Peter come in for an interview on the show.
Jacked Up was recently named the Honorary Elk of the Year, and in his attempt to get all dressed up for the event, he realized that he was out of razors. Given his limited time, he had to improvise by shaving with a hatchet he had lying around, and he posted the video to James Kevin’s channel (link below) for your viewing entertainment.

Finally, Jacked Up gave James Kevin an update on the European tour that he and English Bob are planning, which sustained a few hiccups when Jacked Up and English got into a tussle and had to patch things up and then when Jacked Up encountered some problems with the dancers’ union in London. Apparently, he thought that James Kevin’s show needed dancers, but they got it all straightened out.

The interview abruptly ended when Jacked Up’s beeper went off and he informed listeners that he had to go break some guy’s leg in Kearny, New Jersey.

DE206 Jesus Teaches, and the Geography of your Soul

Storyteller Series | Beat the Piñata, Tools to battle the pain of Abuse! - dHarmic Evolution Podcast
[audioalbum title=""][audiotrack title="Jesus Teaches" songwriter="James Kevin O'Connor " wav="https://dharmicevolution.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/06_Jesus-Teaches.wav" width="300" height="500"]
Jesus Teaches

Welcome to Episode 206 of the dHarmic Evolution podcast! On this episode, James takes listeners through his background and history with organized religion and how his spiritual journey has brought him to be a follower of Jesus. James attended parochial school until about 6th grade, and while he didn’t have any experiences as traumatic as some in terms of abuse, he felt that the way religion was presented in the Catholic Church was not conducive to him wanting to remain faithful to the Catholic Church. Ultimately, he found the way that sin was viewed and handled through the act of confession, the overall demeanor of several of the Sisters at the school, and the oddity of some of the Catholic practices drove his way from the Catholic Church but laid the foundation for his future involvement in organized religion.

Particularly, James was enamored by the stories about Jesus that he heard in parochial school, and this led him to begin seriously reading the Bible when he was in his late 20s. A few years ago, James joined a Baptist Church – First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, NJ – and he has been pleased with his experience there as well as the challenging teachings of the pastor there, which help James’ own faith and relationship with God develop. Whereas James found the Catholic Church to be liturgical and stodgy, his experience at the Baptist church has been characterized by celebration.

Along the way, James has also been impacted by the writings of Vernon Howard on spirituality and contentment. James was even inspired to write his song “Geography of the Soul” song by Howard’s ideas about preferring to explore the territory of life over studying the map. Towards the end of this episode, James reads a passage from Howard’s “Mystic Path to Cosmic Power” and connects this message about the true self with ideas from the New Testament and Walt Whitman.  James has found his own spiritual awakening in being focused on the truth, open to learning, and quick to ask the Lord for help.

DE205 English Bob tells us how it feels, “Like I’m Home”

English Bob tells us how it feels, “Like I’m Home” - dHarmic Evolution Podcast
[audioalbum title=""][audiotrack title="LIke I'm Home" songwriter="James Kevin O'Connor" wav="https://dharmicevolution.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/07_LIke-Im-Home.wav" width="300" height="500"]
Like I’m Home

On this episode of the dHarmic Evolution podcast, James discusses the ideas that inspired his song “Like I’m Home” on the recent “Gratitude” album and he is joined by English Bob later in the show.

James asks listeners the question “Where do you feel completely at home?” and encourages them to think about the structure, mindset, person, or physical location that makes them feel at home, secure and treated with dignity and respect. James feels most at home in his spiritual walk with Jesus and tries not to get too tethered to things of this world.

English Bob tries to answer the question, but he first fills listeners in on the latest happenings in Lower Ipswich. He has recently gotten very involved in learning and teaching fencing, even inventing his own move called the Ubiquitous Larchmont move,(patent pending) which he demonstrated in one of his YouTube videos, and he even started some UFC training on the spot as he was being chased by a pack of coyotes.

Meanwhile, Mama Bob has developed a condition called “don’t mention it” (dementia), so English and Mama Bob have been consulting with Dr. Woofenboot about the best treatments. So far, their midnight escapades have consisted of gathering huckleberries and waiting for wolves, the gangplank prank involving Nessie the Loch Ness Monster, and playing billiards in the garden.

It seems that the “don’t mention it” has been caused by Mama Bob’s accident last month that caused her to fracture her cranium and receive the zipper effect surgery. English Bob knew that there was an issue when he found Mama Bob in the garden holding a llama in a UFC Kimura hoof lock. Her other symptoms have been an obsession with watching UFC every night and consequently getting into fights of her own at Percy’s Pub.

English says that despite all of these dark spots, he sees glimmers of hope, and this patience, strength, and faith are the feeling of home to him.

DE204 Meeting before the Meeting | A Skype with English Bob & Jacked up Jimmy

Meeting before the Meeting | A Skype with English Bob & Jacked up Jimmy - dHarmic Evolution Podcast

The topic of this episode of the dHarmic Evolution podcast is meetings in corporate America. James shares his own experiences in meetings that seem to have no purpose except wasting time and money. Too often, James says that people abide by the “when in doubt, call a meeting” philosophy, but when you are paying people to stop their normal work in order to attend a pointless meeting that could have been an email, the system is broken. James mentions Jeff Haden, a writer, and editor of Inc. Magazine, who has written on this topic.

Many industries thought leaders like Seth Godin don’t even take meetings anymore because they have found that it is more productive to handle the problem or project in a smaller and more direct setting. In addition to just having fewer meetings in general, James also thinks that people should not be allowed to “think out loud” during a meeting because they should have been fully prepared ahead of time. He also advocates for having meetings at odd times like 9:03 or 11:54 so we don’t neglect the lonely numbers that never get scheduled.
Finally, James plays a recorded Skype call between English Bob and Jacked Up Jimmy in which they discuss James’ European tour. English and Jacked Upstart the call by discussing an upcoming meeting with an unknown purpose and unknown attendees. They decide that they should schedule a meeting before that meeting, so they can determine what the meeting should be about, where it should take place, what they should eat, and who should be invited. After a few minutes of banter resembling Abbott and Costello, hopefully, listeners get the point that more thought should go into calling meetings.

DE203 English Bob stops by for a visit to tell tall tales from Lower Ipswitch in England!

English Bob
[audioalbum title=""][audiotrack title="Tango On" songwriter="James Kevin O'Connor" wav="https://dharmicevolution.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/09_Tango-On.wav" width="300" height="500"]

On this episode of the dHarmic Evolution podcast, James is joined by the infamous English Bob, a friend of the equally-infamous Jacked Up Jimmy from a few episodes ago.

English Bob transports listeners into the unparalleled and quirky world of Lower Ipswich much like Lewis Carroll introduced the world to Wonderland.

English Bob’s mastery of the English language will somehow simultaneously be crystal clear and make you scratch your head in confusion. But regardless of your comprehension of his tall tales, you will undoubtedly be entertained and your creativity will be pushed to its limits by the end of our time together.

You won’t believe the turn of events that took Mama Bob from gathering gooseberries in the thicket to being destined for the Guinness Book of World Records. Auntie Griselda certainly has her own theory for the tragically provident incident that prompted the doctors to conduct an operation involving a zipper.

English Bob had to pause his tour with Jacked Up Jimmy to rescue some orphans of a starchy variety and organize an adoption program in the community of Lower Ipswich, which is still recovering from Granny Grabowski’s escapade involving pink stilettos.

If you haven’t already, be sure to check out our videos of English Bob instructing fencing and luring the North American Yeti, both of which for very unique reasons!

English Bob is truly a character, but we could all learn a thing or two from his exceptional wisdom, if even not in the way we expect.

DE202 “Speak to Me” whom, or what speaks to you?

“Speak to Me” whom, or what speaks to you? - dHarmic Evolution Podcast
[audioalbum title=""][audiotrack title="Speak To Me" songwriter="James Kevin O'Connor" wav="https://dharmicevolution.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/10_Speak-To-Me.wav" width="300" height="500"]

“Speak to Me” its the subject of today’s discussion, have you ever found yourself unconsciously repeating phrases, statements, using language that is not yours? Have you suddenly awoken after the words left your mouth and said to yourself, where the hell did that come from? that’s not me.

I want to get into all of that on today’s show and question why do we (the huddled masses) impersonate each other constantly, and most of us do it in a way that we are not even aware of?

What about the unconscious repetition of certain words or phrases?“Absolutely” (I believe) started with the hit movie Rocky 1976, it started kind of slowly, But then it picked up speed and everyone everywhere in the US started saying, (instead of “I agree with you”), they opted for “Absolutely” and it picked up steam.

What about here in the NY/NJ area, “it” got substituted for, “It is what it is”?

How do you speak to people, how do you communicate? Do you observe what you say to people and is it authentic, or are you replaying sound bytes from your mind’s memory that is not really you being your authentic self?

The Reason why silence is good, it’s healthy, my best friend, why Speak to me was necessary for me to write, was it really a man and woman, or was it, God?

Quotes:
“I love Seth Godin, the guy is so brilliant, I am reading his new book” “This is Marketing”.

“He protects his intellectual integrity by doing things that most people don’t do, like not watching TV, and not going on Facebook.”

“My favorite strategy is silence, so I am in the Seth camp, I have not watched TV for months and months, I can’t do Network Television stuff.”

“Everybody has to find their own way to protect themselves from the media bombardment, I think the overstimulation does not allow your brain to process properly, in a way that is healthy for you.”

The 10 most common misused phrases:

1) “I could care less”
2) “For all intensive purposes”
3) “You’ve got another think coming”
4) “ A complete 360”
5) “Jive with”
6) “It’s a doggy dog world”
7) “On tender hooks”
8) “Runner-ups”
9) “Nip in the but”?
10) “Irregardless”

About two years ago I noticed one yoga instructor started using the word “Equanimity” suddenly every Single Yoga class I attended, the instructor would start using “Equanimity” always a female, no dude is going to use that in a sentence!

In the US we had an election here in 2016 and shortly after that, I remember everyone using the term Xenophobe, how many people really knew what the word Xenophobe meant or where it came from? Talking heads on all the news channels they all knew all about it.

Seth Godin, the brilliant man, I am reading his new book, “this is marketing”, he stopped watching TV, does not go on FB…………me 2 on the TV, network TV is so horrible and unimaginative. It seems that after 9/11 we all decided we need a TV in every possible commercial office in the land, but don’t bend over, they are coming for your orifice next! My mind is a precious thing, and I will not waste it.

The Reason why silence is good, it’s healthy, it’s my best friend, why Speak to me was necessary for me to write, was it really a man and a woman, or was it, God?

Lyrics Speak to Me
Author/Composer James Kevin O’Connor

Speak to me, if only with the beating, of your heart, Hey walk with me, can you feel the lines of demarcation, melt apart?

I Cherish every single color, in your silhouette, your presence, and your inner voice would always cut right through, all the noise, all the noise.

Speak to me, I’ll share with you the tools of my experience, I acquired them through the language of uncertainty, and I’ve learned that simple silence, holds the key, enlighten me, enlighten me…

Bridge
I will protect you from the avalanche of pain, he’s just an old familiar visitor, from past campaigns, from past campaigns…

Break
Speak to me with a silent gesture, with innocence and honesty, a warm look in your eyes, a gentle touch, your shared energy with me, and although you never made a sound, you now know how, to speak to me, you speak to me.

Chorus
We’ve become a Family of Strangers,
No more leather bound traditions, that we used to know
We’ve become a Family of Strangers
Inside and upside down, makes it hard for love to grow.

I can see young fatherless faces
Silhouettes flash on my wall,
I can hear them asking questions,
As they stumble and fall.

Hey Ma can you tell me, what my father was like
Did he walk and talk like me, and did he have ambition like me
I would have loved to see but…

Jacked up Jimmy | In a State of Grace & Union Problems! - dHarmic Evolution Podcast
State Of Grace

We celebrate episode #200 on the dHarmic Evolution today with an old friend, “Jacked up Jimmy” he comes to the interview in classic Jacked up Style loud and boisterous as ever. But he left the interview in such a sweat that he jumped into some strangers Hot Mustang and sped off to take care of his Union problem!
On the show, he explains to James Kevin about his troubles with the Union, men showing up without their workboots, and no hard hats. Member of the Elks Club Lodge bowls with his buddies on Tuesday night.

Favorite quotes by Jacked up Jimmy:

“A guy comes with his boots off, what is that,? or he shows up without his

hard hat, sometimes they don’t cooperate and I gotta make sure they do”

“You gotta have alignment, you can’t just have complete anarchy.”

“It’s like going to bowling at night without the ball, sometimes we do go bowling without the ball, its just a happenstance of circumstance.”

“Listen you gotta understand something about the bowling, it’s never about the bowling, it’s an excuse the get away from our wives.”

“Its camaraderie, its escapist, it’s escapism, that’s the whole thing about it.”

“James Kevin, so you have a camaraderie session, and you sit there and complain about your wife.”

Injuries to Vilhelm Fernandahollow, who threw the ball so hard that he sprained his scrotum, but he will be back, he will be bigger than sliced bread.

On the subject of English Bob:

“He’s got me waiting in the Lobby!”

“Maybe there is some trouble at home with Mama Bob?”

“Mama Bob, she’s the Matriarch, she’s like the ark of the covenant.”

Jacked up Jimmy’s beeper went off and he had to go take care of “Union business and throw some guy off a roof or something.”

State of Grace single

Geography of the Soul Album

State of Grace Written by James Kevin O’Connor

Chorus

But I will not retaliate, cause my life’s just great, no need to reciprocate, its just not my state. I refuse to evaluate, my heart holds no hate, I will not participate, I’m in a state of grace.

You must’ve had a Mississippi moment way down deep in the delta where your daddy was born, are you a little bit torn, the thought never struck me till now that way down deep inside you were a woman of scorn, is that the way you were born?

Bridge

I’m sending dangerous angels, to wrap their soft white wings around your heart, and help you make a new start……
