DE236 Archbishop Spencer Garnica from Colombia, kills his own cancer with faith!

Archbishop Spencer Garnica from Colombia, kills his own cancer with faith! - dHarmic Evolution Podcast

Joining us all the way from Colombia today is Archbishop Spencer Garnica. Spencer was born on the island of Creole. Speaks English, Spanish, and his native language Creole.

Spencer grew up in a society of Christian culture and is the oldest of 11 children. He grew up loving music and musical instruments like the piano and guitar. His love for music and singing has contributed to his praise and worship career in his path to priesthood.

Early calling

One-night spencer decided to pray after experiencing a dream. In his dream, spencer saw a man coming down with the sun. and out of the sun, the man emerged, floating on air. The man gave spencer bread to eat and something to drink, all of which spencer did. After asking him who he is, the man told Spencer that He is Jesus. Spencer, later on, tried to explain the dream to his mother, who brushed the dream off as an effect of spencer’s hunger.

Afterward, spencer approached his cousin and friend, who would take him to the first Baptist church in the Atlantic, where he would later on become a member.

One night during a revival in the church, the preacher pointed to him and said that it is the Lord’s will that Spencer becomes one of the Lord’s servant.  Henceforth, spencer joined the seminary, only aged 14 years, armed with nothing but hope, dreams, and ambitions to serve the Lord.

Childhood

Being the oldest of 11 children, Spencer had no choice but to lead a life of responsibility and hard work. He’d wake up early in the morning and help his mother prepare his siblings for school, take them to school, feed the domestic animals before finally preparing himself and going to school.

He’d also help out with other house and life chores, such as fishing, cooking and cleaning the house. Looking back though, spencer is grateful for the life of chores and responsibility that he grew up in because this was God’s way of preparing him to serve others.

Music Journey.

As a teenager, a music concert was to be held at Spencer’s hometown, but because of his strict and tough mother, spencer couldn’t ask her for permission to attend it. So instead, he decided to sneak out at dark and not just attend the concert, but perform in it as well. What resulted was a magical night for Spencer, he ended up winning both at the concert and winning his mother’s heart. His mom could no longer deny it, Spencer was a gifted child with a mission and purpose to serve others and the Lord.

Long after Spencer joined the seminary to study theology and priesthood, music would always be a part of him, ‘’The bible and music’’ he says, ‘’The bible and music.’’

Demons, marriage, and fate.

After being in the Baptist seminary for ten years. It was time for Spencer to move to the next step, he now wanted to be a priest.

But that wasn’t all, Spencer was also blessed with a gift, a gift of vision and sight. It is this very gift that would, later on, lead a local pastor to label him as being possessed by a demon. Something spencer didn’t take too kindly of.

Short of choices and places to serve his lifelong mission and purpose of preaching, Spencer’s cousin who was a pastor in Bogota called him and offered him an opportunity to serve under the church he was in, under the condition that Spencer marries. A condition Spencer wasn’t really comfortable with. Spencer was young and wanted to focus his full attention and energy in serving the Lord, and so he had to forego the opportunity and wait for the lord.

And as fate would have it, Spencer received a call from a former secretary of his enquiring whether spencer still had ambitions to become a priest. Spencer was over the moon and accepted the offer, and thus began his lifelong journey into priesthood under the Anglican church.

Quotes

 –  In life, we are all under different journeys. And that is why some of us aren’t as compassionate or helping as others. It’s through this that I’ve learned to never judge anyone.

 –  It’s good to serve the Lord, it’s good to help and be merciful to others. And every day we do something for someone, the lord up there takes note.

In the show

 –  How Spencer overcame cancer through prayer and Faith

 –  Listen to Archbishop Spencer sing How Great Thou Art in English and Spanish

Did you know Spencer means Provider for others? Archbishop Spencer has based his whole life ministry providing for and serving others.

DE235 World Gratitude Day

[audioalbum title=""][audiotrack title="Gratitude" songwriter="James Kevin O'Connor" wav="https://dharmicevolution.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/01_Gratitude.wav" width="300" height="500"]

Have you Connected with your Gratitude this week?

September 21st, It’s gratitude week! In life, there’s a lot to be grateful for. Despite everyone talking and posting all over the internet about gratitude, about how they practice it, giving tips on how to be grateful; the real question is, do they really practice it? Is it something that they feel?

Well for me, gratitude is something that I practice on a daily basis. From the amazing beauty of nature to the very breath in my body, and the perfect health condition, all this and so much more are some of the things that fill my heart with joy and gratitude.

Unfortunately, many of us take it all for granted. One thing you can do to be more grateful every day is to start a gratitude journal. Include daily statements of what you appreciate and are thankful for. There’s no wrong or right way to go about it. Consistently write down what you are grateful for on a daily basis, and I assure you it will put a smile on your face every single day.

World gratitude day, allows both individual citizens and organizations within wider societies to celebrate the broad meaning of gratitude in a variety of ways. So let’s do this, let’s help each other, with information, with resources, with advice. Let’s all be grateful together!

The History of World Gratitude Day

It started in 1965 in Hawaii, when an international gathering decided it would be a good idea to have one day per year to formally express gratitude and appreciation for the many things to be found in the world. The hope of the founders of World Gratitude Day is that by taking time, one day a year, to reflect on the amazing things we have in our lives, it would positively impact our well being and make us happier, more contented people. How to celebrate?

Gratitude is something you can find any minute of the day. All that matters is the mindset because, to be honest, it’s the simple things in life that we forget to be grateful for every day that matter. Simply having a roof over your head, and a bed to sleep in, that’s what matters.

So many people lack the basic necessities to live a comfortable life, there are blocks of homeless people all over the streets of America. A nation that’s endowed with resources, and somehow, so many people are suffering. What’s my answer to all of this? Doing my small part. If I can help that needy person who is right in front of me at that very minute, if I can impart some kind of loving gesture or kindness to that person, then I’ve made a difference. If we can all play our small parts, that’s how we send big waves into motion.

But is one day nearly enough? Well, I don’t think so. I think it’s something we should do every day, in our lives and in our hearts. From when we wake up, to when we go to sleep, in our thoughts, and in our actions, in our conversations, and in our reflections. That’s how we cultivate a culture of gratitude in your lives. In the episode.

Find out why September is such an amazing month. Can we do without the four seasons? Listen to the title track from my album “Gratitude” Be blessed!

DE234 Carol Schulte: An Empowered and an Empowering Woman

Carol Schulte: An Empowered and an Empowering Woman - dHarmic Evolution Podcast

James features an old friend in this episode of dHarmic Evolution. Carol Schulte is the woman who never sits still, as defined by James. She is a public speaker, a traveler, a forefront of transformation, and a brave, courageous woman. Clearly, she is being empowered by her experiences, and these enable her to empower others as well, particularly women.

Conversation Highlights:

[03:01] How’s Carol?
[07:24] Dr. Seuss’ Metaphor
[09:48] Women’s Bravery
[10:53] The Three Bravery Killers
[15:56] Bereavement
[20:00] The Bangle Story
[23:34] Bungee Jumping Experience
[32:26] Carol as Master of  Travel
[39:40 ] Looking Forward

The 5 Great Quotes from Carol Schulte:

[09:11] “The perfect moment will not magically arrive. …I really believe that comfort and growth cannot co-exist, and if you are not growing in your life, then, you’ll not gonna feel successful.”

[14:00] “Being able to see women doing things that you never thought they could, and it becomes possible for, after that, that’s freedom powerful.”

[25:22] “Courage is not maybe an act of doing, but actually, it’s an act of being…being brave enough to be you.”

Interesting Interview Moments

[7:24] Dr. Seuss Metaphor

Carol shares that one of her favorite books is  Dr. Seuss’ Oh, The Places You’ll Go. This book talks about the ‘waiting place’, and she mentions the two types of waiting which are: those that are in our control and those that are out of our control. According to her, those moments which are in our control are more detrimental to us.

[9:48] Women’s Bravery

On bravery, she mentioned that both men and women are brave. However, women have a harder time compared to men because women spend more time analyzing, thinking things through, taking care of everyone around them, and building relationships.

[10:53] The Three Bravery Killers

The three bravery killers enumerated by Carol are Perfectionism, People-Pleasing, and Procrastinating. These are big things for women. Women have to be conscious when they are giving in to one of these bravery killers so they can recognize it. Upon recognizing, they have to do things differently.

[11:35] Making a Difference through Public Speaking and Women Empowerment

There are two things that give a huge rush to Carol, and these are public speaking and giving empowerment to women through different events like skydiving and surfing. Public speaking enables her to create ‘aha’ moments which are powerful while her events with women make her experience confidence and celebration.

[14:11] Carol as the Forefront of Transformation, a Cheerleader

Though she can transform the lives of women, Carol mentions that it’s the people themselves who are catalysts of the change. She also says that she is more of a cheerleader, and her mom is her best cheerleader. She then narrated her lowest moment, and that’s the death of her beloved mother. Carol even shared about the lost bangle which is her connection to her.

[23:34] The Lady’s Vlog

Carol speaks about her vlog for it shares what it means to be brave and courageous. She excitedly tells her bungee jumping experience…in her birthday suit! She mentions that her vlog sends the message that the biggest act of courage is to be yourself.

[27:09] Amanda on Pressure, Social Media, and Depression

Here, Carol stresses that we should be conscious of our mental health. She also says that exposure to social media can cause pressure and may result in depression. She mentions that social media is not real and that we should not compare yourself to what’s posted there.

[32:26] Carol as Master of Travel

She passionately says that the people whom she met in her travel are the ones that make her travel unique and special. Travel makes her curious and leads her to do something a bit different. At this point in time, Carol does not travel in order to escape. Now, it’s more on work and to make a magical relationship.

[39:40] Carol Looking Forward

Carol looks forward to finishing her book in the next six months, and she will also be launching a brave leadership program in October. She plans to work with twelve women for six months.

In this episode of dHarmic Evolution, James sits down with Amanda Shaw, a singer-songwriter from the UK. Amanda has this evocative distinct voice which rooted in her childhood and teen musical experiences. Her influences include Tori Amos, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, and Faith Hill. In the interview, Amanda shares about her passion, her stories, her journeys, her aspirations to go back to the center stage to share her music with the whole world.

Conversation Highlights:

[03:01] Amanda as a songwriter and singer

[13:40] Learning the things of being a writer

[28:40] Her process of songwriting

[31:00] Amanda’s writing regimen

[44:51] Her Goals in the Next Months

[53:23] London music scene in the eyes of Amanda

The 3 Great Quotes from Amanda Shaw:

[3:38] “As a musician, we have to wear so many hats… songwriting… performing…gigging.”

[22:16] “As a singer and as a songwriter, we should have an end goal.”

[22:21] “The reason why we get into music is not to write a hit song,… but we want to express ourselves.”

An Interesting Interview Moment:

Amanda shares her story with Kelly Clarkson when she was looking forward to putting together a new album. She considered her range and her sound.  She wants to work it out for the song to make a hit. She also considered what the song tries to build and what story it tells. She mentions that it’s important to identify the recurring theme.

Then, she shares her writing regimen when she looks for ideas for her songs. She does not actually follow a daily process; rather, it’s her creativity that switches her on. She mentions that she does not write in the morning but she expresses her ideas at 10 o’clock in the evening. Cool, right? For her, evenings are the best time to write because her tiredness throughout the day could not bring her creative self. Also, running makes her come up with creative, and she has morning pages where she writes all her ideas.

Aside from songwriting, she would like to go back to the center stage as a performer. She also shares that she would be contacting publishing companies that might be interested in her songs. She would also try to set up gigs and be more visible on Facebook. She would opt to have an acoustic guitar and Cajon drums to accompany her in her performances.

The 3 Great Songs of Amanda Shaw:

[4:42]  First Track: Sanctuary

The title of the song means getting back to yourself again. It is finding that place in you, your sanctuary. She even mentions that you need time in finding it.

[23:50] Second Track: Without You

It was written by Andrew Ross, and it was recorded in his studio. In this music, there was a mood, and it sounds like what will happen to you when somebody leaves or is without you.

[39:00]  Third Track: Stelf

This song was not written by Amanda. She explained the unique title of the song by connecting it with the tiger which is always ready to get its prey. Tigers do things in a clever way, and the person in the song is like a tiger.

[47:26]  Video: Black and Blue

This song was written by  Gabrielle Miller, and the video was made by Faraday Indiana. She was really inspired to sing it and had a great time filming the video.

An Update from the World Maestro, Colin O’Donohoe.
The Pangean Orchestra and the World Maestro’s Musical Process.

On this episode of the dHarmic Evolution podcast, we welcome back the World Maestro, Colin O’Donohoe. Colin was on episode 6 of the podcast and hopefully, you will enjoy hearing about what he has been up to for the past 3+ years since that appearance.

One of Colin’s big projects is the Pangean Orchestra, which is based in Phoenix where Colin lives in the U.S. but also has a branch in Istanbul, where he spends several months out of the year as well. The orchestra’s goal is to travel around the world sharing the different sounds and styles of music in a way that broadens all listeners’ perspectives of the world and culture, bringing everyone together through the common language and experience of music. Colin is a true student of the world’s music, always seeking to respectfully share the traditions of each culture represented. He partners up with likeminded musicians all over the world to experiment with new sounds and hopefully make something that connects with the audience.

Key Quotes:

“The idea of the Pangean Orchestra is to combine not only the instruments but also the ideas that the instruments’ traditions have with them.”

“The more time you spend in that music, the more you begin to see those colors.”

“Beauty in one culture is not beauty in another.”

DE231 To Woodstock Or Not To Woodstock?

To Woodstock Or Not To Woodstock? - dHarmic Evolution Podcast

“It was one problem after another”

How Woodstock 50 fell apart!

Woodstock 50 had nearly every resource a festival could ask for the storied brand name, massive financial backing and industry goodwill.

Where did it all go wrong?

James talks about the current passing of the 50 year anniversary, and how it did not happen, then does a replay of his spin on the milestone back in January, and shares his original song, “Peace and Love”.

Max Yasgur allowed his dairy farm to play host to 400,000 music fans at The Iconic Woodstock Music and Art Fair held at Bethel NY August 15, 1969.

Ha! It was never in Woodstock!

What was supposed to be 50,000 people attending, turned into more than 400,000!

My response to Woodstock many years later is a song called Peace and Love that reflected the times, the social temperament, the Vietnam war, the draft, the dead, and the courage of our young people that had risen peacefully to say “no more”, and, “hell no, we won’t go”!

Special thank you to Clara Scott for her article on Joni Mitchell. Clara is a writer for the Michigan Daily.

Joni Mitchell’s masterpiece, “Woodstock” and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young performed it at the Concert.

Laura Cheadle, my favorite Hippie, inspired this broadcast, please check out her Episode DE176, find out why the “hippie vibe” fits her so well!

Peace and Love were written by James Kevin O’Connor in 2011.

Had a pretty good time, back in 1969, I was a little too young for Woodstock so I visit often now tye-dye shirts, and Crimson cows, and Love, Hey just two words changed everyone, turned a lot of heads down in Washington, you can’t fight free will with a bigger gun, hey what’s all this crap about Peace and Love, don’t you know I’m in the middle of re-election.

Chorus:

Yeah, Peace and Love, Hey it’s easy Man, you don’t need to have a plan.

It’s in the holy bible and koran, hey far out man, I like living with a Cruzan tan, a little taste of living off the land, it’s such an easy thing to understand when East meets West there will be Peace and Love.

I remember waking up in a daze, staring through a purple haze, we’ de all gather round to watch the evening news, praying that someone had the brains to blow out the fuse. That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind, flower power hell no we won’t go, while the jungle bleeds red, with teenage dead, what the hell we doing playing Giant steps on the Moon.

Bridge:

It’s amazing how we seem to find, a way to tiptoe around the landmines, I stretch my hand out connect to you, hey brother to brother, just twin reflections, of one another, could we take a chance and say, could we take a chance and say Namaste?

hey Namaste~

Best from Amy:

“We’re put on this Earth to do you know stuff that you know is going to change the world.”

“You know a lot of the artists they work you know they work full-time part-time right? So I’m doing both. I’ve got the three jobs, I’ve got a singing career. I’m Hannah Montana!”

“I’m always in the moment…  I’ll be at work, and something will come to me, and I’ll grab out my notebook on my phone and just start typing it in.”

“Canadian Redneck” Amy Rose is as down to Earth as an artist can be, and we’re lucky to have her back on the dHarmic Evolution! She tells us about how her work/life balance; it’s not easy juggling being an EMT, a Mom, and a country singer at the same time – but this real-life Hannah Montana pulls it off with stellar songs like Sunday Morning After and One Of These Days.

About Amy:

Amy grew up on her parent’s classic country music, so it’s no surprise she wants to take everything song she hears and turn it into a country jam. She recently worked with producers Marty Beecroft and Glenn Coulson of VIP, and released her first international release to radio single!

Featured Songs:

– Sunday Morning After
– Sunshine
– Party Like A Redneck
– One Of These Days

Today on the dHarmic Evolution podcast we are diving into a variety of great topics. I will be having a conversation with the man who was my first real mentor on the guitar. We’ll chat about his journey and life experience as well as his beautiful, musical talent.

In this episode, I am speaking with George Barker. George has influenced me in so many ways. I would describe him as a light in the wilderness. He is a brilliant musician, composer, author, and has an amazing sense of humor. For many years he performed up until he became paralyzed in 2003. He unfortunately no longer performs due to a rare disorder called transverse myelitis. This is a disorder where the immune system attacks the spinal cord. Doctors don’t know the cause of the disorder at this time. It’s extremely rare, as only one to four in one million people contract this rare disease.

George has continued to live his life and pursue his passions despite the disorder. He currently lives in Kentucky with his wife and two dogs. His dad was actually born in Kentucky and he always saw himself moving to Kentucky. His entire family had a love and talent for music. His dad was a guitarist who was a pro for a while before World War II and his mom was also involved in music. Music ran in his blood.

George went on to study at Berkley where he got really deep into theory and harmony. He focused mostly on harmony and guitar performance. He actually dropped out to join a band, which was encouraged at Berkley because you could always come back. Today George just really loves to play the guitar and help people. He continues to write when he can.

In this episode:

– George’s transition to Kentucky
– Music clips from George
– Amp set up and gear
– Who was on the record and time frame of the record
– The Berkley story
– Gear and recording at Mix-o-Lydian recording studio with Don Sternecker
– George’s family and upbringing
– What connected George to jazz fusion
– Rendition of Amazing Grace
– George’s diagnosis
– Maintaining a positive attitude in light of hardship
– George’s take on what’s going on in the world musically
– At the wire
– The experience of playing with another accomplished guitarist
– Big goals and plans upcoming

James’ guest on this episode of the dHarmic Evolution podcast is a fellow New Jerseyan and one of the few finger-style guitar players in the musical world. Donrique was first introduced to the indy/emo music world when one of his friends in 8th grade asked him to design a t-shirt for his band. He began to hang around with the band and was asked to design shirts for other bands around town, which is when he realized that he really liked that style of music. With his dad’s old acoustic guitar, Donrique started learning how to play bar chords, and when he discovered YouTube, he realized that he loved finger-style.

After a few years of playing finger-style and writing some of his own songs, he played for the owner of CandyRat Records, the home base of most of the finger-style players in the country. The owner recommended that he try to create something unique, which led Donrique down the path of integrating hip-hop and rap into his music and eventually into the singer-songwriter world. Now that he has found his sweet spot, he is committed to being a musician for life, constantly honing his craft and teaching others to do the same.
When it comes to recording, Donrique has found that he prefers to record in stereo, using matched pair microphones to capture sound from different angles. He has been heavily influenced by people like Jethro Tull, John Mayer, Johnny Cash, and Michael Buble, who all sing in a lower register as he does. Donrique is in the musical world for the long haul, building his brand and figuring out what works in the studio more than doing live performances, but that may change. Coming up soon, he will be launching online songwriting and recording courses for interested musicians, which he hopes will inspire and instruct aspiring artists.
